Bengal
Leopard-like beauty • Active • Aggressive • Not affectionate
Ranking of the Bengal on the twelve behavioral traits. The higher the ranking, the more likely the cat will exhibit this trait.
Burmese
The Burmese is one of several breeds that takes its name from the country from which it was initially introduced to the United States in 1930. In this case a psychologist, Joseph Thompson, brought the first Burmese, named Wong Mau, into the United States. Wong Mau became the foundation for the Burmese breed in the States. As Thompson suspected, the Burmese was actually a hybrid between the Siamese and an unknown cat of dark color. The name “Burmese” refers to the cat’s beautiful and splendid appearance.
While this breed was recognized early on by the CFA, it was one of the breeds that had some difficulty with the registration authorities because it was undergoing continuous crossing between breeds. In 1947 the CFA withdrew its recognition of the Burmese, but recognition was restored in 1953. By now the Burmese has body style characteristics that differentiate it from the Siamese. For one thing, it is considerably heavier than the Siamese, and it has a rounded head that fits with its overall round conformation. American breeders have intentionally bred for a body style that is muscular, almost Bulldog-like, but with a sweet round face with round eyes. In a nutshell the Burmese can be described as a well-rounded cat that is well known for its love of affection. Because of its rather stocky, muscular build, well-rounded eyes, and high ranking in affection, some people refer to their Burmese as their “love bug.”
The Burmese comes in a number of color variants, and here is where cat fanciers get a little romantic about their names. You’ll find colors such as platinum, lilac, champagne, fawn, chocolate, and cinnamon. Whatever the color, the Burmese short hair coats are relatively low maintenance; stroking the cat often is about all it takes. If you want to go the extra distance you can get a rubber brush to get a little bit better grooming.
